Dr Melanie Windridge, plasma physicist, speaker, writer, adventurer, Alumnus Imperial College London

Fusion is the reaction that powers the stars – nuclei colliding and combining produce huge amounts of energy with no greenhouse gases and no long-lived radioactive waste.  This makes fusion the ultimate energy source and scientists have been trying to do it on Earth for decades.  But it has so far proved elusive.

This talk will look at the history and the future of fusion energy.  We will consider why it has taken so long and how, with new technologies, we may be able to get to fusion faster.

We will take a closer look at Tokamak Energy, a start-up developing new superconducting magnet technology to make more efficient, smaller fusion machines.  Could this be the key to cracking fusion?

School group lecture places

As part of our mission to share a passion for knowledge, we have an allocation of group tickets for schools to attend our public lectures at a minimum cost. Some lectures will be relevant to the curriculum, some will simply enthral.

If you are a school teacher, you can book a ‘School group’ ticket to bring your students to the event for just £5 per group. You’ll then be asked to provide your school details and the total number in your group so that we can allocate these tickets. Students are very welcome to attend on their own at our ‘Student’ rate of £3. Please email our Administrator here if you need any help with this offer.

Post event supper

After the talk, you are welcome to join other Friends and their guests at a local restaurant to continue the discussion. You can book supper places below.
