A visit to see the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, CERN including the Compact Muon Solenoid whilst they are down for maintenance.

The tour includes visits to the Science History Museum on the banks of Lake Geneva and scientific sites in the Old City.

As the May Members visit was oversubscribed, we have organised this further visit  for Members only. Booking is now open, with places confirmed on a first-come-first-served basis.

The main details and costs are below. Closer to the date of the visit we will be issuing a guide to attendees which will include many more details to help make the tour enjoyable.

You are also very welcome to add your name to an ‘interested’ list, as we may do further visits in the future.  Email our Administrator to be added to this list. You will then be sent details if and when we add a further visit.

Thursday 27 June

Attendees organise own transport to Geneva. Friends have a block booking for accommodation in Ferney-Voltaire, a small town in France conveniently located for CERN, Geneva airport and the centre of Geneva. Ferney-Voltaire is the accommodation centre following the positive feedback from Friends previous CERN trips.

Friends look after room allocations, attendees then pay their hotel bills direct at the end of the stay. As a guide, single rooms are from 79€ per person per night, double/twins up to 115€ per night.

20.00 Dinner for the group, Ferney-Voltaire

Friday 28 June

From 7.30 breakfast (11€ per person per day, to be paid direct at end of stay)
8.20 Private coach transport to CERN
9.00 Overall presentation of CERN, the LHC and visit laboratories and experiments above ground
12.45 Lunch in the CERN canteen (to be paid direct on day)
14.00 Tour of the CMS experiment including underground facilities and the CMS device itself
16.30 Private coach transport back to hotel
Evening - Dinner for the group, fine-dining restaurant in the Hotel de France, Ferney-Voltaire

Saturday 29 June

From 8.00 breakfast
10.00 Private coach transport to Geneva
10.30 Guided tour of Museum of History of Science
Lunch – Near the Botanical Gardens, location TBC (to be paid direct on day)
Afternoon - Guided walking tour featuring the history of scientific discovery in the Old City of Geneva
Evening - Closing Dinner in Geneva, location TBC

Sunday 30 June

From 8.00 breakfast
This is the end of the formal activities however there is an exclusive guided tour available at the Chateau de Voltaire in Ferney-Voltaire for the morning.
Check out of hotel by noon (attendees to pay their hotel bills direct at the end of the stay).

Event fee:

The event fee is £300 per person to cover all coach transport, tour tickets, guide fees, three dinners and Friends administration and host.

Additional costs to be paid direct by attendees include return travel to Geneva, breakfasts, lunches, local transport and hotel rooms.

The event will be led by Friends Deputy Chairman, Bill Blackburn.
