Teams at the College are drawing together a host of exciting new discoveries of how cancers develop which are leading to earlier identification, better imaging and new treatments.

Professor Coombes is a world-leading breast cancer expert at Imperial College London and director of the Cancer Research UK Imperial Centre.

Along with his team, he’s studying how some breast cancers become resistant to hormone therapies by investigating key molecules in the cells.

As well as being Professor of Medical Oncology, Imperial College London; Hon Consultant Medical Oncologist, Imperial College Healthcare Trust; Charles Coombes is Director of The Imperial CRUK Cancer Centre; Chair of The Imperial Cancer Research (UK) Centre Steering Committee and Theme leader for Cancer, Imperial College London.

He is engaged in developing novel methods for prediction of response to endocrine therapy in breast cancer and also carrying out research aimed at understanding the mechanisms of resistance to endocrine therapy and development of novel anti-cancer drugs.

Professor Coombes is using this knowledge to develop and test new breast cancer drugs. This kind of research is urgently needed to give thousands of women whose breast cancer stops responding to hormone therapies more options and more tomorrows.
