Professor Tejinder Virdee, Professor of Physics, High Energy Group, Imperial College London and Spokesperson, CMS experiment at CERN

Three day visit to Geneva including exclusive CERN tour, hosted by Professor Virdee

A hugely exciting, three-day trip for members-only has been arranged to Geneva this spring. Tailored visits to places of interest for Friends, accommodation and dining options have all been organised in advance.

The itinerary begins with a pre-booked tour of CERN on the Friday morning to see the onsite exhibition ‘Microcosm’, the visitor centre of the ATLAS experiment and the permanent exhibition 'Universe of Particles' installed in the Globe of Science and Innovation building.

In the afternoon, Professor Virdee, who oversaw the conception and installation of the massive CMS experiment, will take us on an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour with access to the CMS facility. As both Professor of Physics, High Energy Group at Imperial College and spokesperson of the CMS experiment, he will highlight the contribution that Imperial College has made to CERN. He will then join us for dinner on the evening.

Other bespoke tours over the weekend include visits to: Musee d'Histoire des Science - housed in the beautiful 19th century neoclassical Villa Bartholoni, the museum displays an intriguing collection of scientific instruments from the offices of Geneva-based scholars from the 17th to the 19th century. This includes microscopes, telescopes, sundials, astrolabes and ornate globes. The age-old scientific instruments cover numerous disciplines including physics, astronomy, medicine and meteorology; Palais des Nations, European headquarters of the United Nations; a guided tour of the Old Town followed by dinner; Chateau Voltaire - built by Voltaire when he was 65, he spent the next 20 years entertaining the intelligentsia of Europe here, propounding the tenets of the enlightenment.
