B T S @ The Energy Futures Lab

Wednesday 7th May 2008 @ 18:00

This is an opportunity to go behind the scenes at Imperial College and see the work that is being carried out to develop energy supplies for our future.

?

Providing plentiful and secure future energy supplies for both developed and developing countries, while addressing the environmental impact of energy production and use is one of the key challenges facing our generation. The Energy Futures Lab is working on a portfolio of major interdisciplinary research programmes in areas of key scientific, technological or commercial interest.

?

Our evening will open with an introduction from our host Nigel Brandon, Shell Professor of Sustainable Development in Energy, and Executive Director of the Energy Futures Lab. He will talk about what the Lab is setting out to achieve and how it intends to reach its goals. We will then break up into groups to view work going on in laboratories in different parts of the College.

?

We will be looking at three areas of research and development in particular:

?

bio-energy: The exploitation of biological matter, such as crops and algae to generate a sustainable, renewable energy source, through combustion of plant matter and the production of hydrogen from algae. fuel cells: Imperial College has the largest fuel cells research team in the UK. The technology produces electricity through the electrochemical energy conversion of reactants such as water and hydrogen Solar photovoltaics: The amount of solar energy intercepted by the Earth every minute is greater than the amount of energy the world uses in fossil fuels each year. Imperial has the largest team of researchers working on solar energy in the UK. They specialise in the next generation of solar cells, organic and dye-sensitised cell and solar concentrators to increase cell efficiency

?

These behind-the-scenes events provide a unique opportunity to talk in detail with the engineers and scientists who are working on these leading edge projects. After the tour we will all meet up with Energy Futures Lab staff for some wine and a light buffet.
